Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, Doctor of Biological Sciences, V.P. Skulachev heads the Belozersky Physico-Chemical Biology Institute at Lomonosov Moscow State University, and is the dean of the Faculty of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics which was organized in 2002 at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Main areas of research and main results:

V.P. Skulachev is an outstanding Russian biochemist of world renown, the author of more than 750 scientific articles. He described the phenomenon of intermembrane electron transfer, discovered the effect of thermoregulatory uncoupling of oxidation and phosphorylation, proved the conversion of chemical and light energy into an electrical form by means of intracellular membrane proteins, predicted and then demonstrated the cable transport of electrical energy in the membranes of living organisms, clarified the biological significance of the nonequilibrium distribution of Na+ and K+ ions between cell and environment, discovered a new type of energetics of living organisms - the "sodium cycle". In recent years, the scientific activity of V.P. Skulachev is associated with the study of the molecular mechanisms of aging processes.

Educational activity:

For more than 50 years, V.P. Skulachev gives a course of lectures on bioenergetics for undergraduate and graduate students, included in the mandatory program at the Faculty of Biology and at the Faculty of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics at Lomonosov Moscow State University. During all this time, Skulachev is the organizer and leader of the Moscow City Scientific Seminar. Since 2003 V.P. Skulachev is the organizer and leader of the interdisciplinary biomedical project 'Skulachev Ions', which brings together about 300 domestic and foreign scientists from dozens of research laboratories and universities. The purpose of this project is to develop innovative drugs aimed at combating various age-related pathologies of the living organisms and slowing down the aging process. The project is based on the ideas put forward by V.P. Skulachev back in 1969.

Academic activity:

For more than 20 years, V.P. Skulachev is the editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Biochemistry-Moscow, which has become one of the most cited biological journals in Russia in recent years. He is a member of the editorial boards of FEBS Letters, IUBMB-Life, Journal of Bioenergetics and Biomembranes, Biophysics Reviews and Letters, Cell Cycle, The Open Aging Journal. V.P. Skulachev is the Honorary President of the Russian Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists, member of the European Academy and President of the Club of Russian Members of the European Academy.

Scientific awards:

V.P. Skulachev is a laureate of a number of prestigious Russian and international awards.
