The department of Plant Proteins was organized in 2007 on the basis of the laboratory of plant proteins, which was part of the Department of Functional Biochemistry of Biopolymers of A.N. Belozersky Institute of Physico-Chemical Biology. Since its foundation to the present time it is headed by prof. M.A. Belozersky.
Research areas
  1. Plant defense mechanisms against phytopathogens and insect pests and development of approaches to increase plant tolerance to biotic stress.
  2. Mechanisms of secretion and physiological role of hydrolytic enzymes of filamentous fungi.
  3. Mechanisms and organization of food proteins proteolysis in insects. Development of medicinal preparations for treatment of human digestive system disorders.
Research results
(i) Plant defense mechanisms against phytopathogens and insect pests and development of approaches to increase plant tolerance to biotic stress.
(ii) Mechanisms of secretion and physiological role of hydrolytic enzymes of filamentous fungi
(iii) Mechanisms and organization of food proteins proteolysis in insects. Development of medicinal preparations for treatment of human digestive system disorders
The results improve our knowledge in the field of protein biochemistry and evolution, and could be used in biotechnology for development of new effective approaches to control of insect pests and in medicine for the development of drugs for treatment of human digestive system disorders.
International collaboration
During the last 15 years (1996-2012) the laboratory of Plant Proteins and formed in 2007 on its basis Department of Plant Proteins have been carrying out joint research work together with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA ARS Grain Marketing and Production Research Center, Manhattan, Kansas), Biological Centre of the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic (České Budeiovitse, Czech Republic), the Center of Biological Research of the Supreme Council of Research (Madrid, Spain), University of Milan (Milan, Italy), Institute of Genetics and Development of Cultivated Plants (Gatersleben, Germany), University of Fort Hare (South Africa), University of Copenhagen (Denmark).
Grants and projects
The research work in the Deparment was supported by RFBR individual grants, grants RFBR_Russia-Belarus, RFBR_Russia-Spain, RFBR_Russia-South Africa, RFBR_ofi_ts, Russian Ministry of Science _Russia-Italy, grants of the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC), U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF), NATO-Russia Council, the Soros International Science Foundation.
Educational activities
Professor Y.E. Dunaevsky gives a course of lectures on biochemistry and physiology of fungi for the fourth year students at the Biological Faculty of Moscow State University. Under the supervision of the department researchers are run course, graduate and post-graduate dissertations of students from the Faculties of Bioengineering and Bioinformatics, Biological and Chemical Faculties of Moscow State University. Over the past five years (2006-2011), there were defended 4 Ph.D., 7 M.Sc. theses and over 15 term papers.
